SOFTWARE TRAINING
Self-paced Learning with Element K
An Element K subscription provides SMG users with access to over 500 online software tutorials. These are self-paced lessons in
desktop applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint as well as Dreamweaver, Adobe products and much, much
more (
click here (88k PDF) for a complete listing).
To activate your Element K subscription, self-register by logging into
http://smgnet.bu.edu and follow links for SMG Services > Information Technology Services > Computer Training Sign-up.
If you are a faculty member and are interested in incorporating Element K into
your curriculum, please contact training@management.bu.edu so that ITS can
work with you to insure subscription availability to all of your students.
Instructor-led Training
The BU Office of Information Technology (BU OIT) offers instructor-led training through their Personal Computer Support Center
(PCSC), WebCentral Office and other technology departments. For a listing of these classes and for registration instructions,
visit http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/tutorials.
SMG faculty and staff interested in individual or department training for School-supported software can contact
training@management.bu.edu with their request.
CLASSROOM EQUIPMENT TRAINING
For training on the new classroom equipment see our 7-minute
online training video. The video requires
RealPlayer. If you experience difficulty opening the video with
RealPlayer there is a shortcut on the classroom computer's desktop which links directly to the video.
Podium Training for Students
To become familiar with SMG classroom technology, students can register through
SMGnet for a podium practice session.

What kinds of online learning tools are available?
The School of Management maintains an annual contract with Element K, a provider of online software tutorials. As a member of the
Boston Consortium for
higher education, Boston University secures low subscription rates through the preferred vendor, Element K.

How can I take an Element K tutorial?
Self-register by logging into
SMGnet and then follow links for SMG
Services > Information Technology Services > Computer Training Sign-up.
These online, self-paced tutorials are also offered in the
Personal Computing Support Center (PCSC) labs by
reservation.
How long does a tutorial take?
A typical tutorial will take 4 hours to complete. You can choose to take lessons by topic so that you do not have to go through an
entire course just to learn one feature of a program.
What tutorials are currently available?
Currently, there are over 500 titles available through the School of Management agreement with Element K. For a complete list of
offerings, see the self-paced courses in the
Office Productivity and Design and Media
catalogs.
Classroom Equipment Training
Can students access classroom equipment in preparation of in-class presentations?
Yes. Room 326 is open on weekends from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM for 30 minute practice sessions. To reserve a spot, go to
