What is SMGpublish?
http://smgpublish.bu.edu
SMGpublish is a Unix server available to SMG staff and
faculty for publishing Web pages of an academic nature. With approval from the faculty sponsor, official SMG student
organizations can also request space on the server.
Other Web publishing servers are available to SMG departments as well as to individual faculty, staff and students. To

Who can use SMGpublish?
School of Management faculty and staff with a BU username and Kerberos password.
Are there any exceptions? What about student groups?
Official SMG student groups may request space on SMGpublish; these queries will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Qualifications: The student group must be academically oriented, must obtain faculty sponsor approval to request space on
SMGpublish, and must email
helpdesk@management.bu.edu to request space.

How do I create an account on SMGpublish?
Staff and faculty members of the School of Management, should:
- Using a secure file transfer protocol (FTP) client open an SSH connection to smgpublish.bu.edu (see the
BU software distribution page to
download a free FTP client).
- Enter 'new' as for login name and password (you might have to enter the password twice).
- Complete the registration application - simply follow the instructions.
The administrators of SMGpublish will receive your request, and will respond with an e-mail.
How much disk space will I have?
Users are given 2 MB of space for their web materials, and 50 MB of space in their home directories (files in the home
directory are not visible from the web). Email

with your request for additional space if needed.
Web Publishing
Who writes my web pages?
You do. ITS does not write the Web pages for users of SMGpublish.
For information about HTML training visit the
Web Central pages.
Where do I put the files for my web site?
When you log into SMGpublish using an FTP tool such as WinSCP, you will see a directory called 'public_html'. Put all your
web site files into that directory.
You may also put folders within your directory. If J. Doe put a folder with a file in it into her directory, the URL for
that file would be http://smgpublish.bu.edu/jdoe/folder/file.html
How do I view my web site once it's posted?
Point your browser to http://smgpublish.bu.edu/username/, replacing 'username' with your own BU username.
