SMG Active Directory Accounts (AD)

Our Active Directory is an implementation of Microsoft’s network directory service, a centralized system that simplifies management of user accounts and computing resources. At SMG, the AD allows users to use BU login names and Kerberos passwords to log in. A significant benefit is the unified sign-on (i.e., SMGportal, SMGtools, SMGnet, and computer labs all recognize your ACS login).

Your AD login uses the same username/password combination that your ACS login uses. However, in order to take advantage of all the online resources that SMG offers, you must initiate your identity on the SMG Active Directory.

Activating AD: Go to http://www.bu.edu/computing/accounts/ad/smg and complete the online pages. Note that you must have a valid ACS login first.

Accessing the Active Directory (SMG Local Area Network) from home: You can use FTP, a method of remotely connecting to a server for file transfer or you can establish a VPN connection. For more information on these methods of connecting, see http://smghelp.bu.edu/laptop/laptopconfig_userguides.shtml.

Troubleshooting: First, be certain you have completed the online form at
http://www.bu.edu/computing/accounts/ad/smg and are following the proper login procedure (using your correct ACS username/password combination). Remember, you must be enrolled in an SMG class to access the AD. If your login does not work, visit the Information Technology Services Help Desk in Room 342 for help.
