New Users Configuration Guide
Vista/XP/2000/NT Users

These are the steps to configure a laptop computer with a Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP/ Vista operating system. This process is best performed if done while connected to the School of Management network within the building.

WARNING: During this process, you may be asked to insert the Windows Operating System CD-ROM into the computer at various times. Be sure to have this CD-ROM on hand before starting this process.

For a printable version of these instructions click here (96k PDF).
STEP 1: Connect your computer and test your Network Connection
Connect your laptop to any of the network ports in the building and open Internet Explorer. If you are able to see a current version of your home page, then you can proceed to Step 2. If Internet Explorer does not find the page or gives an error, then you should check to make sure your Network Settings are properly configured. Click here to see how to check for this.

STEP 2: Download SMG Logon Utility Program
  1. Download the SMG Logon Utility program according to your affiliation with the University by clicking on the appropriate link below:

  2. At the File Download prompt box, select "Save this program to disk" and click OK.
  3. Save the file to your desktop by either clicking the Desktop Icon on left side of the Save As box, or by selecting Desktop from the Save In drop down box. Then click Save. After the download is completed, click Close in the Download Complete window.
STEP 3: Using the SMG Logon Utility
  1. Double-click the SMG Logon icon on your desktop.
  2. You will then be prompted with a logon box asking for a User Name and Password. The username is your BU login name and your password is your Kerberos password. These are the same username and password you use to check your BU email.
  3. Several DOS windows will quickly appear and then disappear and then you will see a box stating that you have successfully logged into the SMG Network.
  4. Click OK. You are now logged into the SMG Network and can take advantage of various resources on the network. For further details about these resources, please click here.
  5. To use the network resources, you must double click the SMG Logon icon and login every time you connect your laptop to the SMG network.

Make sure your operating system has the latest updates, patches and service packs. Go to the Microsoft site to search for the latest updates, patches and service packs for Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP/Vista.
