Printer Setup for Mac OS 10.5 or later: DBA Students

1. If you are off campus, use the VPN

If you are in an off-campus location, you will need to connect to the VPN before you can proceed with these instructions (and every time you want to print). If you do not already have the VPN software installed, you can download it from the VPN page. Once you are connected to the VPN, you should follow the instructions below to begin printing.

If you are printing from an on-campus location, or if you are already connected to the VPN, or connected BU wireless network, you are ready for the next step.

2. Perform the following steps once to set up your printer(s)

The following steps will only need to be performed once on each computer that you plan to print from.
  1. Go to the Apple menu and open System Preferences
  2. Click on Print & Fax. (If you do not see Print & Fax, click the Show All button, and then you will see it.)
  3. Within the Printing section, click on the + icon to add a new printer.
  4. gear icon On the toolbar at the top part of the window, look for an Advanced (gear) icon.
If you do not see it, add it as described in step 5. If you see it, skip to step 6.
  5. Hold down the Control key while clicking anywhere on the toolbar of that window (for example, on the "More Printers" icon), then choose Customize Toolbar from the menu that appears. Drag the Advanced (gear) icon to the toolbar and click Done.)
  6. Now click the Advanced (gear) icon on the toolbar. From the Type menu, choose Windows. NOTE: it could take a minute before you are able to choose anything from the Type menu...give it a few seconds.
  7. Enter the Queue as smb://smgfreequota.ad.bu.edu/printer name - substituting the printer name with (smgprtdba531 or smgprtdba610) that you wish to use (e.g. smb://smgfreequota.ad.bu.edu/smgprtdba531.
  8. In the Name field, type a nickname that you would like to use for this printer (e.g. smgprtdba531).
  9. Select Generic Postscript as the "Print Using" driver. Then click Add.
  10. Once you have added all the printers you want to add, you can close the Print & Fax window.

3. Print

  1. Open the file you wish to print
  2. Go the File menu and choose Print. From the printer dropdown, select the printer that you want to use. Once you have selected the printer, click the Print button.
  3. You will be asked to log in as a “registered user”. Type your BU Login name in ad\login format -- for example, ad\jschmoe and your password is your BU Kerberos password. Be sure to use your BU Login, not your Mac username and MAKE SURE that you do not forget the ad\ because without the ad\ your authentication will fail AND if you go on to the next step with that mistake, you will have saved incorrect information into the Keychain.
  4. Once you are sure that you have used the ad\login format, check the box to save credentials in the keychain. Click OK. **** (Very Important - this will save your password so that you do not have to retype it again)
Once you are ready, click Print.
