On this page you will find ITS laptop policies and a list of ITS laptop services as well as options for obtaining these services.

Laptop Policies

  • For liability reasons ITS cannot provide laptop support for company-owned laptops. If you are using an employer-owned laptop, it is recommended that you consult the IT department at your place of employment before making configuration changes.
  • Only Microsoft Windows 2000 operating systems and above are compatible with the SMG Network environment.

Laptop Configuration Services

The following laptop configuration services are available:
  • SMG Network drive connectivity and troubleshooting
  • SMG Network printer connectivity and troubleshooting
  • BU Wireless Network setup and troubleshooting
  • Virus and spyware detection, removal and troubleshooting

Important notice about viruses and spyware. Boston University REQUIRES that all users connecting to the BU campus network have properly installed and updated antivirus software. For a free download of McAfee antivirus software, see http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/virus/software/. Boston University does not require but highly recommends all users run some spyware detection program. For a free download of anti-spyware utilities, see http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/spyware/.

For more comprehensive laptop services you can consult the BU PCSC or your laptop owners manual, or you can contact the manufacturer for a list of vendor authorized service centers.

Laptop Support Options

Laptop Configuration Sessions: these are drop-in sessions hosted by ITS staff during the first two weeks of the fall and spring semesters (check the SMGnet calendar for details).

Individual Laptop Configuration Sessions: these are individual appointments with ITS staff. At the time of the appointment, you will meet with a technician in room 342. Please be prepared to work with the technician for the duration of the appointment. Be sure to bring the following laptop accessories: AC adapter, CD ROM, floppy drive, Ethernet card and adapter, all operating system (OS) disks, and all miscellaneous cables and adapters required to operate your computer and peripherals.

If you arrive more than 15 minutes late your appointment will need to be rescheduled.

To schedule an appointment, email helpdesk@management.bu.edu with the type of computer and version of operating system you have.
