SMG Student Computer Labs
Saving Files from the SMG Computer Labs
The Computer Labs (rooms 316 or 328) in the SMG building, are equipped with seven laser printers
for the printing needs of students and staff. SMG students use four "free quota" printers, all
of which can print double-sided pages automatically (the Kyocera units in room 328).
Non-SMG students can use pay printers. Color printing is also available to all users.
It is important that you save your work frequently. Although unlikely,
various interruptions could result in data loss, including power failure,
bumped power cord, or machine failure. Fortunately, there are several methods available to
you for saving your work.
Network Drives
When you double click on the My Computer icon on any of the SMG computer lab workstations or
classroom podium computers, you will see the network drives. Below is an overview of the different
network drive designations.
Home (P:)
Your
Home directory will have the (P:) letter designation. Only you have access to this directory.
This is a private area on the network for you to store files. You can save up to approximately 10
megabytes (Mb) of file space to this location.
Applications (H:)
The (H:) drive is the
Applications directory which stores programs that run off of the SMG network.
Classnote (Q:)
The (Q:) drive is the
Classnote directory and contains files placed on the network by
faculty and staff for communication with students. You have read-only access to this directory.
Share (S:)
The (S:) drive is the student
Share directory to which you and other students have read and write access.
Any private or sensitive data should never be written to this directory since all students can access these files. You can save up to 3 Mb of data files to this location.
Note: Non-SMG students have access to the H, Q, and S drives only.
Portable Storage Devices
The most popular method of storing student data is with a USB drive. All computers are equipped
with several USB ports, including two on the left edge of each monitor. To properly, and safely,
eject the drive, students should right-click the green arrow icon near the clock in the
bottom-right corner of the screen, and select "Safely Remove."
